Sportsters

the US Robotics Sportster is a very common modem, based on the fact that it is a reasonably cheap brand name external modem.

A list of command that the sportster supports can be found by typing AT $

As a base modem the sportster is well suited, except that the modem will NOT answer the phone when data is coming in. This means that you will have to create a cable

See the trouble shooting section on my base hangs up while answering the phone

The Sportster has a number of dip switches, which need to be configured correctly for the modem to work. Note that since we are using a cable to work around the base hangs up while answering the phone, you can not use survey controller to configure the mode.

1*

Down

DTR needs to be ignored. This setting may cause problems if you try and use the modem with windows.

2

Up

Verbal result codes. The system should always have verbal codes for other uses.

3

Down

Send Result  codes. The system should always have verbal codes for other uses.

4

Up

Echo offline commands. Useful for debugging

5*

Up

Auto answer.

6*

Up

Carrier detect normal. Since we use the carrier detect signal in the cable this must work as normal

7

Up

Load your settings on startup, not the factory defaults. Normally this shouldn't matter but on the V.Everything the factory defaults set the modem into a mode in which the baud rate changes. Which is NOT what you want

8

Down

Smart Mode. Should be in smart mode for other uses

Items with a * are VERY important, incorrect setting of these values will mean that the system will not function.
