Cellular digital packet data: a standard for transmitting bursts of data between voice calls on the analog wireless network. CDPD is an overlay on the AMPS cellular network. Note that while it works on the AMPs network you do not have coverage everywhere, it is mainly in the cities.
We Recommed the Airlink Redwing modem, although for some applications the Novatel Sage Modem is also suitable
GPRS is a similar system built on top of GSM.
It is also referred to as "wireless IP" and is a method of sending and receiving information via mobile devices. CDPD allows information to be sent in "packets" or blocks over the existing analog cellular network. It is best suited for short, periodic bursts of information. Most of the modems can be configured to not require the connected device to understand IP. Currently trimble equipment doesn't understand IP so this is a very important feature.
The problem with using the modems to convert RS-232 to IP and back again is that it limits you to a point to point connection. One base can only send to one rover.
CDPD works by using unused voice channels for data. This means that the pricing is much more reasonable. If you are lucky $55 a month for unlimited data!
You can get 19.2Kbs a second over the link but information I have read indicates that the amount of user data is more like 9600.
